MIKE PRESCOD - 1938-2010
Mike Prescod MBE, made an invaluable contribution to the Northamptonshire Voluntary and Community sector , improving the lives of his community by providing support and mentoring to those in need. He emigrated from Barbados to the UK when he was only 19 and he started working towards bettering his community from a young age. In 1998, the people from Wellingborough elected him as their first Mayor of African Caribbean origin. Following this, in 2002, Mike was awarded an MBE for services to the voluntary sector and for his community work. Mike`s work changed the lives of many people from his local community and his achievements are quite astonishing. He made a great contribution to the development and creation of the Wellingborough African and Caribbean Community Centre. As recognition of his pioneering work, the members of Wellingborough African and Caribbean Community Centre elected him Honorary Life President. As a result of his outstanding community work, Mike was also awarded a merit Award by the current Prime Minister of Barbados in 1999. Moreover, in 2001 Mike was appointed Chairman of the Northampton Probation Service by the Home Office.
