George Mighty
George Mighty has been the Chair of the West Indian Community Association in Derby since 1986. George`s main motivation for being active in his community is the desire to make sure that the West Indian minority has a voice in the wider community, as well as trying to insure cohesion and well-being for its members. George considers that the lack of involvement from the younger generation is one of the biggest challenges his community faces at the moment. He wishes young people would understand and value their heritage, and would therefore feel motivated to continue the work of those before them.
One of George`s greatest achievements is the success he had through his academic development. In 2012, he was awarded an Honorary Master`s degree from the University of Derby, for all the work he has done in the community. Moreover, in 1990 he was awarded an MBE for his services to society.
